The appointment of Muhumed Hassan Jama, known as Xoday, as the governor of Awdal by Abdirahman Mohamed “Ciro,” the leader of the SNM regime in Hargeisa, was initially met with hope for progress and development. However, Xoday’s tenure has quickly devolved into an oppressive regime marked by authoritarian tactics reminiscent of military dictatorships. It is imperative that his actions are condemned in the strongest terms for the harm they inflict on the people of Awdal, particularly the youth.
A- Regime of Fear and Intimidation
Governor Xoday’s administration has systematically suppressed the fundamental rights of Awdal’s citizens. By threatening those who dare to protest against injustice, unemployment, corruption, and the region’s developmental stagnation, Xoday violates not only basic human rights but also the constitutional principles of the governing regime in Hargeisa. His actions are a grave affront to the freedoms that every individual in Awdal is entitled to.The right to protest and demand accountability from one’s leaders is non-negotiable. It is a cornerstone of any society that claims to uphold democratic values. Xoday’s refusal to engage with the legitimate grievances of his constituents has created an atmosphere of fear and resentment that stifles progress and innovation.
B- The Mirage of Sovereignty
WOQOOYI GALBEED, as it stands, is not recognized as a sovereign state on the international stage. It is an entity where the Gadaboursi and Isaaq clans have sought a peaceful coexistence, maintaining a semblance of order through mutual respect and understanding. Governor Xoday’s actions undermine this fragile balance, threatening to dismantle the cooperative spirit that has allowed these communities to live side by side. His leadership style, characterized by coercion and control, raises critical questions about the legitimacy of his authority and the broader governance framework within Somaliland. It is a stark reminder that true sovereignty begins with the respect and empowerment of one’s people, not their subjugation.
C- Echoing the Past
The language and tactics employed by Governor Xoday are chillingly similar to those used by notorious military figures like General Morgan. This is particularly jarring given Xoday’s family’s historical opposition to dictatorial regimes. His current actions betray the very ideals his family once fought against, highlighting a disturbing disconnect between his governance and the values of justice and freedom.
D- Call to Action
The time has come for the people of Awdal to stand up against this oppression, drawing inspiration from the courage shown by the Isaaq in 1988. Justice for the people of Awdal, Salal, and the Gabiley District is non-negotiable. It is crucial that they unite in their demand for accountable and transparent governance that respects their rights and aspirations.
E- Demand for Justice and Reform
Governor Xoday’s tenure will be remembered as a dark period in Awdal’s history unless immediate changes are made. The people deserve leaders who listen, respect, and prioritize their well-being. It is time for a leadership that embraces dialogue over dictation, cooperation over coercion.
In condemning Governor Xoday’s actions, we affirm our solidarity with the people of Awdal and their right to a future free from oppression. It is only through collective action and unwavering commitment to justice that true change can be achieved. The resilience and determination of Awdal’s people will be the driving force in reclaiming their rights and shaping a brighter, more equitable future.
